I get asked the questions a lot about: "Why San Luis Obispo?", "Why a bakery?" and "Why did I start after being an educator for so long?"
Here is my story:
Sugar Momma Pies started in late 2015 out of need and desperation..on many levels.
In early November the local Marie Calender's in Seal Beach, CA shut their doors. Several of my neighbors on the “NextDoor Neighbors” App were worried that they wouldn’t have a pie for their Thanksgiving dinner. The thread of panicked hosts and guests kept growing, but no real “homemade” solutions were being offered.
Meanwhile, I was perusing the internet trying to figure out how to get my daughters home for Thanksgiving. I had just lost my 13 year teaching career due to health issues, and a longer than expected recovery from open heart surgery/aortic valve replacement from Late November 2013. The surgery alone was difficult- (doctors, surgeons, and cardiac rehab said I was the worst heart valve they’d ever seen), but then the lack of blood and oxygen to the brain from my ailment put me in a delusional state and limited my cognition even after my replacement- think of “bouts of Alzheimer/dementia” at 47 years old. The loss was so real...my brain, my job and now I was facing losing both my home and my security. All I really wanted was to celebrate my life with my daughters, and facing not having them home for the holiday was a lot to deal with.
I saw the panic of my fellow neighbors, and family gatherers on the internet grow. These people wanted a pie- a homemade pie to serve to their families. I had the skills to make pie...these things I learned from my mother. So, I wrote a quick advertisement, and my lovely neighbors offered to give me a chance…”I mean, it’s got to be better than CostCo, right?” Within an hour or two I had 35-40 orders. I charged cash upfront, and the first customer brought me her payment and I went and bought the supplies. I swear I was down to my last $5.00 that I found in a pair of jeans. That Thanksgiving I made over 40 pies...and it was amazing, and fun and a huge blessing. By Christmas I made my mortgage payment, flew my girls home from college and sold over 100 pies, and coffee cakes. Sugar Momma Pies was created, and by Spring of 2016 my house was sold, and I moved to San Luis Obispo. A Lovely lovely dream come true.
When I tell you that this pie maker is baking with the heart- it is true. I have put my heart on the line for this life and my family and now your Pies! Thank you for allowing me to share our story..now order pie, and get your hearts checked. Let our murmurs be about the chatter of love for family and life and not about health.

I am grateful that I get to continue this life baking, telling our story, and being a mom. They are my reason. Hope you have one, also.
